Chi and Bio-Electricity

In modern thought, the ancient hydraulic analogy can be complemented with metaphors derived from electrical theory.

The concepts of polarity, voltage, currents, and electrical fields resonate very closely with aspects of Chi, particularly Ren Chi, the Bio-Energetic Landscape and the Three Treasures.

In fact, the human body consists of many polarised molecules, including water, the phospholipids which constitute our cell membranes,
the mineral ions which maintain different polarities within and outside of the cell, and a variety of proteins. There are definite electrical polarities between the interior and exterior of cells, and many biochemical processes rely on the electrical potential associated with this polarity.

The brain and nervous system is composed of millions of neurons, each of which are connected to thousands of other neurons by long filamentous axons and dendrites. These filaments are designed as conductors of electrical currents. The events associated with the conduction of action potentials along neurons involve the generation of very subtle magnetic fields which feed back into the bio-chemical behaviour of the cell. ny electrical current also generates an electrical field. Due to the myriad electro-chemical processes continuously occurring in the body, there is also a bio-electrical field that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body.

Chi as a Quantum Phenomenon?

On this sub-molecular scale, human consciousness is influenced by quantum phenomena. The bio-electrical field is very similar to the concept of Wei Chi, or protective chi that is said to surround and protect the physical body. The “wiring” of the brain’s circuitry is so complex that neuro-scientists are only begining to understand the components. This complex bio-electrochemical web is closely integrated with the body’s endocrine system, which regulates activity throughout the body at a cellular and organ level.

Any electrical current also generates an electrical field. Due to the myriad electro-chemical processes continuously occurring in the body, there is also a bio-electrical field that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body. The bio-electrical field is very similar to the concept of Wei Chi, or protective chi that is said to surround and protect the physical body.

A bio-magnetic template?

Experiments conducted with injured animals and humans indicate that the bio-electrical field generated by a living being plays a major role in organising processes of healing that restore the structural integrity of bodily tissues - in other words it plays a role in how regenerating cells align and organise themselves. In a sense, we could consider this as a bio-electrical template or blueprint for cellular and tissue structure and function. However, in most cases, the potentials and currents associated with life processes are very subtle, and our measuring equipment still too crude to measure and record this accurately.

Scientific research conducted on experienced chi kung practitioners has measured extraordinary electrical phenomena generated in the course of controlled experiments. Distinctive currents and voltages were measured during these experiments, and the practitioners were apparently able to activate these phenomena at will. However, other, non-electrical phenomena are correlated with chi kung, and include warmth, bioluminescence and ultrasound.

Some researchers claim that Chi is essentially a form of bio-electricity, while others assert that the electrical currents and fields measured are a correlate or manifestation of chi-flow, and that chi itself is an underlying phenomenon that may still be too subtle to be measured by current technology.

Intriguingly, it is experiments conducted on living subjects including volunteers, labrats and cell cultures that have shown the clearest scientific evidence for the existence of a bio-energetic field that can be directed and shaped by the force of the mind and intent. Practitioners were able to influence the growth of cell-cultures significantly, either healing or harming, depending on their intent and the character of chi projected.
